Welcome to Fourth Grade!!
I am so excited for a wonderful year of learning and growing with you this year! This year we will be engaging in many cooperative activities to learn. We will have challenges. We will make mistakes. Learning is a process and we are on this journey together.
This tree represents the exciting growth we are about to begin. You have many experiences that you will be bringing to your learning journey. Together we can share our old experiences and have new ones together to have the best year yet!
I am very excited to not only provide you with many great learning experiences to tackle the challenging fourth grade curriculum we are responsible for, but also to guide you on a journey of becoming a better you. One big difference you will notice and feel when you walk in the classroom is the Aloha Spirit. I am excited to share my love for Hawaii and the beautiful culture I have experienced. You will also notice the flexible learning environment. We will be learning the 7 Habits of Highly Effective People to build character and expand your opportunities for success. To learn more about the 7 Habits click on the tree image.
Together we reach for the stars to make a difference!!

Smart is Something You Get, not something you are!
Everyday the students recite this saying at the end of morning announcements. This belief comes from the idea that people are not just born smart, it is something that is a result of effort, hard work, and perseverance. Many students have their mind made up at an early age. They believe they are either smart or not smart. In both cases, this belief is a misconception. Without the reinforcement of effort and the resilience to work through mistakes and challenges, growth cannot happen.
This initiative came from the book Mindset, by Carol Dweck. In the book, Dr. Dweck encourages parents and teachers to promote the growth mindset in children. She gives clear definitions and examples of both growth and fixed mindsets and give practical suggestions for fostering the growth mindset.
It is my intention to foster the growth mindset in this classroom. Mistakes, even failure, are the gateway to learning and growing.
