Numeration System
Our numeration system uses Arabic numeral, or digits 0-9, and is based on groupings of ten. Ten ones is ten. Ten tens is 1 hundred. 10 hundreds is 1 thousand, etc.
Place value organizes big numbers into ones, tens and hundreds.
Every three digits becomes a new period. The first period is the ONES, then THOUSANDS, MILLIONS, BILLIONS, etc.

Mathematical Practices
The 8 Mathematical Practices define how a student should be able to act and think as a mathematician, whether they are doing basic addition or higher level math, like Calculus or Algebra. These practices are not just good mathematical skills, in many cases they are good for science, social studies and language arts thinking as well. Being able to say what you are thinking and do what you are saying are the building blocks to application of learning.

Motion Geometry
A tessellation is work of art that collages the same geometric figure using a pattern. The shape is transformed over the page to create an illusion. Transformations include slide (translate), flip (reflect), and turn (rotation).

Fractions
Based on the data we collected, Violet fourth graders need more instruction and more practice to master fractions. We have decided to teach fractions year round, instead of doing a "unit of study" in one small window of time. Each Monday from now until the end of January will be dedicated to fraction fluency. We will be applying a variety of strategies to teach fractions, including writing, representing fractions in a variety of ways and using number lines.
